Roelof is particularly skilled at capturing the quintessential spirit of the small towns and farms he portrays. Inspired by modern Impressionism, Roelof typically enjoys using loose brushwork and optical effects of dramatic light created in the mornings and evenings to convey shifts in atmosphere. This year, as a slight departure from his former work, Roelof has broken his hibernation cycle in his studio during the winter months to capture the subtle nuances offered by cloud cover and moody skies.

This group exhibition constitutes the second installment of a curatorial project established in 2014.
Co-Existence Part I featured three artists from three continents Bronwen Vaughan-Evans/Australia, Jan Smith/Mexico and Nomusa Makhubu/South Africa, whose work commented on issues of alienation, migration, displacement and post-colonial identity. Now three diverse artists have again come together to continue this dialogue with the additional focus of environmental politics and the exploration of dislocation and strife of a society in conflict with the land and the corporate structures that sustain it.

Seasonal changes often offer intervals to reflect on the concept of time. Pondering the ebb and flow of life stimulates an acute awareness of the natural phenomena that exist in the world, awakening the basic human desire to seek order. The exhibiting artists possess a keen sensitivity in observing structural plans and visible patterns that emerge from natural affinities, which develop conceptual associations over time. The subsequent selection of work represents distinctive visualisations depicting the power, vulnerability, simplicity and above all the beauty of nature.

Troubled by the state of the nation and rendered speechless by the dismal vaudeville of the President’s 2015 State of the Nation Address (SONA), South African comic artists present their own personal State of the Nation Address Response (SONAR). SPEECHLESSrepresents a voice articulated in the visual, paradoxically, the only language equally accessible to all eleven languages.

In this exhibition entitled “Broken Text” Stephan Erasmus returns to the act of writing sorrowful love letters to a muse.
In this body of work Erasmus instead of sampling text from various sources of text i.e. sorrowful love songs, poetry and other bodies of text, he generates the text himself as love letters written to a muse. As these letters/bodies of texts are constructed Erasmus explores not only the idealized idea of the muse but also the aspect of the muse as the Siren.

Probably one of the best-kept secrets and undiscovered treasures of Pretoria’s conceptual artists, Andreas Schönfeldt works mostly in the mediums of printmaking and video installation. For this show, he has incorporated found materials as a medium and source material onto selected works on paper. Various printmaking techniques and surfaces create exquisite textures and compositions. He mostly reworks surface prints, by either printing other surfaces, or parts of surfaces over it, or by layering an actual found object as the focal point of a work.

This exhibition showcases a series of photographs tracking the personal journey of current Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane in his political campaign. Marx’s interest in political photography stems from his love of portraiture. So many moments that define our world have been captured in still images, and people as subjects have been central to creating these narratives. For Marx, this exhibition and the telling of stories behind the camera present an opportunity to show the human element behind politics, and to potentially contribute to a future South African narrative.

Bevan de Wet’s new body of work is comprised of a collection of etchings, in which he explores the fragmentation of memory, nostalgia and cultural identity. The two 4m prints are the key works on the show and, consist of traces of shaped etching plates – a collection spanning 7 years – deconstructed and arranged to form a museum-like display of objects and artefacts. De Wet’s interest in how history is chronicled in museums has lead him to explore different ways of viewing, interrogating the emphasis on aesthetic juxtaposition rather than ostensible understanding. Supplementary to this, de Wet sets up figurative and conversational relationships with seemingly mythological characters. These are often drawn from spaces of spectacle such as zoological and museum dioramas.
