A symbol is something that stands for, represents, or denotes something else (not by exact resemblance, but by vague suggestion or by some accidental or conventional relation). In painting and sculpture this almost always implies that the shape of the thing symbolised is reduced to a great simplicity, for example, a vase in painting can be so reduced that it becomes a symbol of a vase and no longer that particular vase.
