Daniel Phaladi was born on 2 May in 1949 in the Limpopo Province. He attended union College to Standard 6, thereafter left to become a gardener, which he still does today. He is married with 4 children, three of which are his own.
In 1969 Daniel Phaladi came to Johannesburg to find work. He painted in his spare time. someone recognised his talent and he was introduced to Bill Ainsley at the Johannesburg Art Foundation. Daniel Phaladi subsequently studied painting and drawing there from 1975-1977. In 1979 he taught himself to sculpt and has since worked primarily in this medium ever since.
