South African Art Gallery - Afronova Modern & Contemporary Art
Afronova is a new Pan African gallery for modern and contemporary art in South Africa created by Billie Zangewa and Henri Vergon. Afronova is located in the Market Theatre Precinct of Newtown in Johannesburg.
Afronova presents exhibitions of modern and contemporary art from the African continent and represent variety of contemporary artists. The gallery has a specialized art bookshop with a catalogue of local and international publications on the art of the continent.
Besides the program of art exhibitions, Afronova hosts performances and screenings on the historic square and happenings with a unique Pan African flavor. Afronova also develops a network of international residencies and facilitate the participation of artists in the major African cultural events like the Bamako Biennale of African Photography or the Dakar Biennale of contemporary art.
Afronova is actively engaged in collaborations with the actors from the neighborhood like the Artist Proof Studio, the Bag Factory, Museum Africa, Kaya Fm and the Market Theatre. These dynamic synergies contribute to the mapping of Newtown and its consolidation as a business centre.
