Smokin’ Aces

This dark comedy/action film is dark and bloody so the R rating is quite understandable. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Ben Affleck and Ray Liotta to name a few, it is a high-strung action movie that follows the steps of several hitmen that are dispatched to kill a former Las Vegas magician and a mob boss who turned into an informant for the government. Witty humor, combined with savage and well-executed action, made this film a really good time. Though it was filmed in several locations, the casino scenes were filmed inside MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa to give that authenticity.

Viva Las Vegas

No list of movies about Las Vegas can go without the King, Elvis Presley. You have probably started singing the song ever since you saw the title of the article. When the production started, they had no script or even a general sense of direction. When the general plot was put together, Elvis and his co-star Ann-Margret carried the entire movie with their great chemistry, and they certainly delivered. Imagine if Elvis was around today though? He wouldn’t recognize much of the city anymore.

Jason Bourne

The fourth installment of the franchise starring Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones, and Alicia Vikander, managed to close down the entire Las Vegas strip for their car chase scene. In the search for ultimate realism, they destroyed over 170 cars in this spectacular scene. And when the filmmakers heard of the dismantling of Riviera Hotel and Casino, they leaped at the chance to add that to their movie.

21

A blackjack drama starring Kevin Spacey and Jim Sturgess. A renegade group of card counters, led by the enigmatic kartu poker, try to take over Las Vegas. The team of players, as a single unit, try to cheat their way through the big casinos. However, as they navigate through the high-stakes environment, they discover that mastering slot online games can also be a lucrative endeavor. But the casinos fight back.

Las Vegas

Ocean’s 11

If you take the 1960s movie, it helped to build the reputation of Las Vegas as a city of gambling, marriage and divorce. Although the all-star cast helps, the movie didn’t age well. But if you take the 2001 movie, whose cast is even starrier, with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Julia Roberts spearheading the heist of the Bellagio, complete with its cascading fountains. According to the Nevada Film Commission, the cast and crew had unprecedented access to the Bellagio and even stayed there during filming. The newer additions to the Ocean’s franchise are not as popular as this fan-favorite but are great movies in their own right.

Of course, these are only some of the movies with a connection to Las Vegas. It would take a while to name them all. But, all these movies together help paint a picture of Las Vegas. It isn’t only the lights and the sound of the roulette table. It has depth far beyond what some people can even imagine. Countless movies, books, musicals, and songs have been made to honor the shiny beacon in the middle of the desert. And due to COVID travel restrictions, who knows when you will be able actually to visit it!
