In art, the term wash is used chiefly in describing a watercolour technique. It is thin transparent watercolour spread broadly and evenly. No brush marks should be be descernible. Wash can also describe diluted arcylic or oil paint applied broadly. Washes can be used in layers but usually in one layer only. Washes are also used in comination with pen drawing.
