Needle is a generic term covering instruments which draw through an etching ground to expose metal below the ground. Such instruments can be sewing needles thrust eye-backward into a dowel rod, compass points, or anything strong enough to go through the ground, yet not so big as to leave a line or dot which will etch into depression too large to hold ink.
