I decided that I want to use the female figure in my new series of oil paintings. At first I was undecided if I was going to use the female of male figure but I decided on the female figure because of the connotation with the female as the bearer of life. Since I am dealing with creation and the origin of life in my new series of oil paintings, I believe the female figure fits in well in the overriding concept.

I did 30 to 40 drawings of the female figure and I eventually came up with a way to incorporate the figure in an oil painting. I am thinking of combing the figure with the surrounding cosmic dust clouds by having the line figure flow into the brush strokes of the dust clouds. This will also enforce my concept of earth and its inhabitants being created out of cosmic dust and on death decaying and returning to dust.

I am also experimenting with working on a completely black canvas, I spray painted some old canvasses with black paint and tested some oil paint on it and it seems to be working well.

I have good collection of books on art and have been going through them recently. One article that caught my eye was about the watercolour paintings of Joseph Turner. Some of his paintings reminded me of the Hubble images of cosmic dust and gas clouds especially in the way he deals with light.

Other paintings that interested me was renaissance paintings depicting Christian and Biblical scenes. I looked further into the way these artists portrayed the human figure and it reminded me a lot of modern day cartoons and graphic novels. Looking at some of my favourite graphic novels I saw that the figures in these graphic novels often are highly expressive; I am hoping to incorporate this expressive way of using the figure in my new series of oil paintings.

Anyway enough talking for now; time to do some serious work on my new oil paintings.

I have decided to begin this blog to keep record of my own artistic process and to notify visitors of art news and new additions to the Arcy Art Original Oil Paintings web site.

I have recently decided to change the direction of my work quite drastically. Previously I have been doing floral paintings, portrait paintings and landscapes but now I want to work more conceptually. My previous work was more about the technical aspects of oil painting and I feel it is time to concentrate more on the conceptual aspects of my oil paintings.

In my new work I am looking to put more emphasis on the creative process and not to force the outcome of the painting in to what I preconceived it to be. One of my past shortcomings have been that I start an oil painting with the exact outcome already in my mind; with my new work I will be working on correcting this and having a more process driven approach.

The subject matter I have been researching for the new body of work is heavenly objects such nebulae and how these objects can give us insight into the creative soul of God. I first became interested in this subject after attending a presentation by renowned South African astrophysicist Professor David Block. I was inspired and did some further reading into the subject and became interested in the view of the universe as an " intelligent design ". I also did some research into quantum physics and learned that God's design could be seen as the same within the tiniest quantum particle and the biggest heavenly object.
